Starting on May 1, 2018, all US-spec automobiles sold in this great country of ours will be required to come with backup cameras as standard equipment. Yay!
The Feds finally (the program had been in process for 10yrs!) saw fit to require all auto makers to give us eyes in the back of our head and I think its about time. If you’ve ever owned a car larger than a Miata, you know: having the ability to see exactly whats going on directly behind you is invaluable.
Whether its a kid, a forgotten bag of groceries or a retaining wall, backing into things that would just assume not be backed into can is no bueno. And sure, most new cars have had backup cameras as optional extras for years, but the fact that they’re now mandatory is great as it now affords everyone that extra level of safety.
Seatbelts, airbags, now backup cameras….we’re getting there people!
