I’m always saying this: design trumps everything. Build a great-looking car, price it fairly, and people will buy it en masse. Hell, just look at Range Rover; their SUVs have been waking nightmares for their owners for decades yet people still flock to them because they look great. Same with old Jags…Same with Fiats…Alfas…you get the point.
Mazda certainly gets this and their new 2019 Mazda 3 is all the proof you need.
Debuting at the LA Auto Show, the 2019 Mazda 3 shows that just because a car is inexpensive, doesn’t mean it has to look inexpensive. It doesn’t cost any more to bend metal into a pleasing, well-proportioned shape that connect with people, than it does a gawky, confused mess. Or worse still: something boring or utterly forgettable.
Anyways, kudos to Mazda for letting their designers showcase their skills and giving us good-looking fun cars that we can afford. Their entire lineup looks great while also being within reach of most folks financially.
I’ve always wondered about the other companies that have a notable lack of good clean design in their model lineup….is it a corporate culture thing? Or they simply don’t have people who “get it” heading up their design efforts. Or maybe its a case of the designs being watered down by Engineering and Accounting on their way to dealer lots. Playing it safe rather than taking a stand.
